Leelenau Wine

Words and music by Nick Vander Vliet

We gotsta be moving soon
off the island Rivillagigedo
in case you didn't know
it's in an archipelago
just south of the Yukon

a territory in Canada
but we ain't heading there no sir
we gotta push east at least
to Walla Walla, Washington

The law has been on our trail
since September when we skipped the rails
when a group of coon dogs snooped us out in Wichita
thanks to that rabbit
that happened upon the scene
and loosened some slack on us
till we saw steam

My brother's eyes he saw a train
my ears heard a whistle ring
I heard a glorious chorus sing
I'll be back home again
cause there ain't nothing like them Michigan fixin's
of fiddle head ferns and hickory chickens
and to wash it all down with some Leelenau wine

I know a woman out on Manitou
it's an island west of Leelenau
where we can lay low till the law blows over and start anew
we can eat all the apples, cherries, cranberries that she grew
and in the winter months I bet she keeps me warmer than you
